In 6 years of blogging, I don’t think I’ve taken more than a month away from posting on my blog. I took to blogging like Naomi Campbell to stilettos on the runway, and I couldn’t imagine life without it. Until now…! I’ve had a lot of fun stuff going on in my life recently, and every time I’ve sat down to blog it just…hasn’t happened. And rather than get frustrated and self-deprecating about my blogging absence like I would have done a year ago, I’ve been embracing it. Which has felt good. So good.
Ok so I haven’t REALLY taken a drop dead break from blogging, but my posts have been a lot more sporadic. You hear it time and time again from creators, how a break was what they needed; but now I really believe it.
As it’s been a while, I thought a quick-fire roundup of twelve little life updates would do the trick (as seen on Daisy’s charming blog).
Grab an iced coffee and let’s have a catch up…
#1 *deep breath* I’m buying my own place and moving out! Eeeeeek, yes. I’m still going through the motions of actually purchasing the property, which is why I’ve been reluctant to say anything on the blog up until this point. But regardless of what happens, you can bet I’ve already been busy creating mood boards and getting excited about table lamps, soap dispensers and vintage prints of Cher to adorn my walls.
#2 There’s been a lot of whisperings-turned-to-chatter about the demise of blogging which hasn’t been the most encouraging thing to hear as someone trying to get back into their blogging groove. I’ve given some serious thought to the future of Fabuleuse Du Jour and I’m definitely not ready to leave this little space I’ve carved out for myself here. Instead, I want to take it forward in a new, more collaborative direction; one that goes beyond just me in outfits.
#3 Another little life happening I’ve not spoken about on the blog before is my anxiety. This time last year I had just started therapy to help me deal with my anxiety, and a year on I can really feel the progress I’ve made. Sinéad of 2017 would have torn herself up about taking time away from blogging and stressed herself out about having to post something – or else she was clearly a failure and not good enough etc etc. Sitting here knowing I’ve stopped letting my story be dictated by my own defeatist thinking feels amazing.
#4 Therapy really encouraged me to look at the roots of my anxiety. Though I was in denial for a long time, I soon realised social media isn’t so constructive to my mental health. It still needs work, but I’m taking steps to make sure my life isn’t ruled by those little apps on the home screen of my phone.
#5 In my quest to minimise social media usage and be more present, I’ve developed an obsession
with podcasts! Keep an eye out for my post rounding up my go-to podcasts soon.
#6 Apparently streaming from YouTube/individually purchasing music isn’t so much of a thing anymore? After endless exasperation from friends, co-workers and family, I’ve finally joined the 21st century and signed up for Spotify! 48 hours in and I haven’t looked back. If playlists entitled ‘DIVAS👑’ and ‘S.A.S.S. (Serving Audacity, Seduction & Sauce) sound like your kinda thing, come say hello on Spotify.
#7 Whilst we’re on the subject of music, remember at the start of the year when I said I was looking forward to new music from Kacey Musgraves? Well she totally came through. ‘Golden Hour’ is another masterpiece of an album from her.
#8 I’ve started a little morning gratitude ritual with a friend. It’s very simple but it’s a lovely way to bring joy into each day. Each morning we WhatsApp each other 3-5 things we’re grateful for that day; anything from the particular shade of the sky that day or something that made you belly-laugh. Try it!
#9 My blog is my creative playground, but whilst I’ve been taking a break from blogging, I’ve been trying to create for the sake of creating. Whether that be through dance, writing, playing dress up, video editing…just putting my energy into something that’s not going to be posted online is liberating.
#10 Speaking of 10…let’s talk about season 10 of RuPaul’s Drag Race shall we? By now you all know how pure delight I get from this show, and this season has it all; iconic guest judges, sickening looks and jaw-dropping lip sync performances.
#11 You know what I’ve missed about blogging? Gushing about skincare to people that get it. My current skincare routine is working wonders, and I’d like to give especial airtime to the Klairs Rich Moist Soothing Serum* – the serum that’s convinced me that serums do make a difference.
#12 I just made dark chocolate and sea salt granola and now my kitchen smells utterly DEE-lightful.
